12 Tips To Enjoy Holidays Without Overindulging

I want you to enjoy the holidays fully. But eating and drinking to the point of feeling stuffed or not feeling good the next day is not enjoyable, yet it can easily happen without some forethought. Here are my top 12 tips for enjoying your holidays without that unfortunate side effect.

  1. Stay mindful, but don’t obsess. Balance your priorities of enjoying yourself and not overindulging.

  2. Do NOT try to diet your way through Thanksgiving. Enjoy every food you want while staying under 50% full outside meals and 80% full during meals. Start by putting less food on your plate and not finishing anything you don’t love.

  3. Prioritize protein.

  4. Get good sleep – EVERYTHING is easier with adequate sleep.

  5. Don’t exercise to earn calories. Rather, exercise to manage stress and improve your sleep. Sign up for one of my live Zoom classes.

  6. If someone asks why you aren’t eating more, tell them you love the food but are trying to avoid getting overfull.

  7. If you are hosting, consider how much food you need to make. Your guests might appreciate not feeling stuffed, and you might appreciate not having so many leftovers to eat or throw out. Make sure you are not the one that’s pushing food.

  8. If you typically munch all day, work to stay mindful and ask yourself if you are really enjoying what you're eating. If not, save room in your stomach for something better.

  9. If you consume alcohol during these events, plan to be intentional about how much you will consume – cutting your alcohol by even 1 or 2 drinks for the day will make a difference.

  10. Practice an abundant mindset. You will have many more holidays to enjoy these yummy foods. Remember, food is not scarce, so there is no need to eat to the point of discomfort.

  11. Plan a group family walk.

  12. Give yourself a break if you eat too overfull and/or drink more than you planned. This is culturally what we do. It can be a lot to overcome, and it takes practice.
